Wire and String Letters - Part Eight

Back to black

After the debate between multi-coloured and black text, the black text won. I could not see a justification for using the multi-coloured selection of paints. Black sits with my practice and continues to draw a parallel between the text in my art and the black ink of a pen.

Word Selection

I have started with a small selection of (short words) to test the idea out before I commit. The plan is to paint and gloss the betters individually and then revisit the string to tie them together in their work formations.

Tiny Vinyl Letters - Part 3

FRAMES. Something very new for me. I cannot recall the last time I used a frame within my artwork.

I am unsure of doing too much to the frame, such as by adding a background. I want to keep it as simple as possible. However, the option of adding an image leaves the outcome open to development.

Rearranging the letters onto the frame was a bit of luck. Having picked the quote and cut out the vinyl letters before picking the frame I was unsure of the quote would fit into the space. By pure luck the quote fitted well.

There is a finger spacing between each work and each line of the quote. As with all of my art practice, I didn't want the arranging of the letter to be a burden.

Wire and String Letters - Part Seven

Connecting the letters becomes about making the linguistic unit part of a word instead of something viewed on its own. I want the words here to be viewed as work and for them to be fixed in some way.

Wire and String Letters: tied together with string, simple and secure. The string can and probably will be cut to hide the joins.

This solution is secure enough to allow the word to hang and take the weight of the rest of the work. I am unsure how these would be shown but this is good to know.

Wire Letters: Linked together.

This feels more robust but also interferes with the text. The chain of letters  easily tangled up - not ideal

Tiny Vinyl Letters - Part 2

Experimentation is one of my favorite things in the studio, my use of tiny vinyl letters has produced lots of offcuts to play with, which has allowed me to play with how the outcome might be presented.

With the DIY nature of my practice, these leftovers become more interesting to me than a final outcome. They are low status and therefore feel lo pressure when working with them, allowing for playfulness and unfinished outcomes.
