Unfamiliars: Tales for the Fireside 2

Putting together my contribution for the Unfamiliars: Tales for the Fireside 2 zine started by considering the title, the first thing that came to mind for me was the first line of many fairy tales, 'once upon a time'. The use of these phases would draw upon shared public language and resonate with others familiar with fairy tales.

Once upon a time...

From taking this initial start point I then explored how to expand this. I often work with automatic writing due to its nonsensical outcomes. I employed my smartphone here, to create digital automatic texts which followed on from the phases, 'once upon a time'.

To create these outcomes I entered the phase and then selected the predicted text, this adds a personal element to the outcome as the phone draws on my most used language. I wanted to move away from these outcomes - mostly as it turns out I am not that exciting and the outcome was not as playful as I had hoped!

Digital Automatic Writing

The second exploration on the start phrase was to look at synonyms for the words, finding words that mean the same thing as each word component. This exploration is the one I decided to develop, it allowed me to start breaking the language and moving it away from the shared public language of the initial phase and move towards something more Dada. The change is slight but enough to distort the reading a little.

Synonyms

Once each of the words in the phrase had been replaced I start to put them together using my ACcomplte4 plaster letters. The maternity of the final outcome is not particularly important, it is just the medium I am currently interested in working in.

Words with Found Letters - Part One

The images below are from my sketchbook, I have been using found letters to create reflective pieces of writing.

The words or phrases produced come from the unconscious, I pick a letter in the first instance and then think about the first thing that comes to my mind, then look for the other letters I need. This process is meditative, slow and does not require all that much brain power.

I have been adding to the collection at the weekends, since starting my PhD. The pages are not dated. A conscious choice to keep the project as free as possible. A collection of thoughts, not pinned to a specific time of date.

The book is intended to be able to be read randomly, rather from cover to cover.

2020 Round Up

What a strange year we have all had!

Ignoring all the global news, this has been a big year for me as I quit one of my jobs and started my PhD at Norwich University of the Arts. This was my new years resolution for 2020, so I am glad that I achieved this (now just to do the thing!)

At the start of each year I like to reflect on the one that has just gone. I definitely did not exhibit as much as I usually do, but I think that is alright given the whole COVID situation. I feel like I have still been able to achieve lots of other arty things. Read on if you want to hear more!

1. Blog

The first achievement comes from this blog, I have posted every week for (over) a year now. This was my other new years resolution! It has been a really good way of keeping myself accountable to doing stuff and also thinking about the stuff I am doing. I am 100% sure that if I done this just in a diary, or as something not public facing then I would have failed long before now. If you are struggling with motivation I would suggested a public blog.

2. Creative Practitioner Support Programme

We have moved into our 3rd year which is amazing, we weathered the storm of COVID shutting our in person sessions down and have actually grown our online community hugely. This has been both professionally and personally rewarding. I cannot wait to see what we get up to in the new year. Keep your eyes peeled for exciting things!

3. CAS

As a board member of CAS (Colchester Art Society) I am charged with Instagram, Twitter and the Newsletter. Again, we adapted and responded to COVID, hosted two online exhibitions and published a few newsletters which reached over 300 members.

Our social media presence is growing day on day and we now have over 3000 combined followers ob Instagram and Twitter. Follow us for regular posts; Members Monday and Throwback Thursday.
