WE ARE THE MINORIES - Plaster Cubes

Use of cubes

I wanted to use the window space of the unit to create an installation of text, the plaster cubes allow for text to be created to fit the context. Originally created to comment on the 'white cube' of a gallery, having them exhibited in an old-shop-window-come-temporary gallery adds to work. Likewise, the DIY nature of the (almost) 5x5 cubes is fitting to the make do and mend situation that We Are The Minories is embracing.

The idea is for the cubes to spell out phrases crafted for this specific context, the cubes will play on the 'we are' aspect of We Are The Minories to help linguistically link the work to the context.

Ideas include:

  • we are here
  • we are still going
  • we are in progress
  • we are now
  • we are working
  • we are who we are

Previous use of cubes

These cubes have almost come full circle, having previously been exhibited, in a more ad hoc fashion within the Minories building. In this showing, no words or phrases were used.

More plaster cubes needed to be made for this installation to allow specific phrases to be spelled out.

The Installation Plans

Phrases to be piled up to create height and visual interest. Each phrase to have its own pile. These to be spread out across the window display.
